An HMV 102D: Date code B over 5 – presumably 1941, before the cessation of production in the summer of that year.
It needs some work to make it look nice.
The external rexine is very darkened, and has some marked scuffs, a small splash of paint, and is generally in need of cheering up.
The little rubber feet are missing, or gone hard and squashed, but should be easily replaced.
Felt on platter has pulled away at edges and needs re-gluing
Some scuffing to interior of horn.
On the other hand it’s got a number of positive points:
Good tidy 5B sound box – though diaphragm needs a good dust.
The correct winder
Nice clean green felt on platter
Auto-brake works properly.
Internal chrome work all nice and shiny
Motor runs steadily, with only the occasional HMV grunt.
External chrome work decent, with only minor blemishes.
Carrying handle fine.
And it’s green.

Looks fine to me--inside and out. Will it play all the way through one 78rpm record on a wind; or will the spring need to be replaced? Thanks!neilmack wrote:An HMV 102D: Date code B over 5 – presumably 1941, before the cessation of production in the summer of that year.

Re: FOR SALE: Green HMV Portable model 102D - £200
Hi Marco
I just cranked it up, and it played a variety of 10 inch discs, each on a full wind, without trouble. A 12 inch acoustic side of Paderewski in Liszt (which plays for 5 minutes) left it slowing on the last few notes, but that's a fairly severe test.
So it's perfectly usable as it is, for 10 inch duties.
kind regards
Neil

Very reasonably priced for a green example. If I did not already have one I would not hesitate to buy it. Someone needs to snap up this bargain.
A couple of hours work with car upholstery cleaner, followed if necessary by green shoe cream will transform the exterior.
12mm rubber cistern washers are about the right size to replace the "feet", but they only come in black, and two are required to replicate the depth of the originals.
