SOLD: Nice All-Original Victor R Front Mount - $1300

Post by HisMastersVoice »

Selling my all-original Victor R (Royal). Runs great (plays a 10” side no problem), motor kept lubricated, and the long throat exhibition reproducer was recently rebuilt by me. Oxidized copper finish still visible on the arm and corners, a bit faint on the motor board (which you can’t really see anyway). Horn is original to the machine. I purchased this from another TMF member almost 10 years ago and he bought it from the original estate in New York and owned it for about 20 years. Additional photos and info available upon request! Free delivery to Union, or can be shipped at the buyers expense.

*Update* I forgot I had this sales receipt, so I will include it with the machine.

Hi Brandon! VERY NICE MACHINE! Please excuse my ignorance; but it has been a long time since I have had a front mount machine and sold off all of my books years ago. Just want to be sure--it the Long Throat Exhibition Reproducer correct for this machine? Single or double spring motor? Thank you so much for your time and sharing your knowledge. Mark Roberts

Mark,

Yes the long throat exhibition is correct for this machine, and since I have provenance back to the original owners - I’m confident that it’s THE reproducer that it was originally sold with. Also, it has a 1 spring motor capable of playing up to a 10” side on a single winding.

Very nice machine. What is the metal clip on the end of the traveling arm? What was it's purpose? I never saw anything like that before. If that is a significant part, now I know what to look for for my Victor R, and other front mount machines.

I asked the same thing when I bought it, but nobody has ever come up with a verifiable answer. My closest guess is that it was a period modification to secure the horn better somehow. The hardware is turn of the century so it’s definitely been there since the beginning.

Does any Victor experts know what that little clip was used for?

I thought Vic R's had black horns with a zinc bell rather than brass but I'm no expert.

A stamped steel horn was standard, and a black & brass horn was the premium configuration. I’ve seen many examples of both. Do a quick google image search for “Victor R phonograph” and you’ll see at least a dozen of them. I guarantee this horn is correct and original to the machine.

The black horn was certainly standard for the early version which also had a record hold down plate. Yours is a bit later & Victor upgraded it.

I added a photo of the Victor R sales receipt I forgot I had until going through my book case yesterday, I will include it with the machine.
