The Antique Phonograph Society is pleased to announce that R.J. Wakeman's seminal work on the "off brand" talking machines of the teens and early 20s is now available on our website:
http://www.antiquephono.org/brand-talki ... j-wakeman/
If searching from the website's home page (www.antiquephono.org), click on the "Articles" tab, then on "Intermediate" in the drop-down menu.
For anyone searching for information on one of these often-forgotten brands, Mr. Wakeman's work will be most helpful. Although information on the specific brands (over 400 of which are listed) is often limited, the opening essays will help put any of these brands into proper context. For those considering the acquisition of one of these machines, Mr. Wakeman has described both the pitfalls and the charms of this genre.
We once again thank Mr. Wakeman for his generosity in allowing the APS to make his research more readily available to the public.

Very good article. I do remember years ago, Tim Gracyck published a booklet on off brand machines. That booklet is very good also.

The list published by Tim Gracyk was also written by Mr. Wakeman, however he has continued his research in the intervening years and has added over 150 more brands to his already extensive list. The new publication on the website is the most up-to-date list ever compiled.
