Post by donniej »

Yup, "Maple Leaf Rag" is now available on 8" Improved Gramophone :) Thoughts, input and (especially criticism) are welcome.
Copies are $20 +5 shipping in USA.

You're making paper labels now? Nice!

I assume you're using the recut QRS piano roll as a source? Joplin's original "hand-played" version was quite "straight" in tempo: after his death, they decided to "jazz up" the roll by altering the note values (rubato).

I didn't think 8" Victors existed until 1907 or so. Who was making 8" masters in 1900 anyway?

Sounds great and looks good too. Is this a copy of an 8" record or a recording that was transferred?

Thanks everyone. I don't recall the piano rolll which it came from, it was a long time ago that I found the recording. I really wanted to make this one has a 7" Berliner but it wouldn't fit. Instead of editing it, I found a studio with some 8" NOS acetates. The "Improved Gramophone" label never had 8" discs, but Joplin was never recorded either... so this one is more of what should have happened 110+ years ago, as far as technical accuracy, I did my best but I still have a lot to learn.

Really great. The combination of a external horn machine and the maple leaf rag is irresistible. The video was too short.
