Photos gone ??

Post by briankeith »

Unless it is my PC (?) some of the featured phonograph photographs seem to have disappeared or just won't load any more. (Edison)

Probably because people posted them using third party image hosting, which is NEVER a permanent solution. People delete the photos later on, the account goes inactive, etc. This is why I stress the importance of uploading photos to the forum so they won't disappear a few years down the road.

Makes sense Brandon - quite a few have disappeared. It's a great reference tool :(

There is also the possibility that people used the user control panel to "clean up" attachments. Unfortunately this has left many posts more or less useless, not just in Featured Phonographs. If possible this feature should be disabled I think. Years ago when disc space was really expensive this was helpful forum maintenance, but now I think the negatives outweigh the positives.

It's really too bad. I would block external image hosting, but that would also eradicate any images hosted externally that are already posted on the forum. It's a difficult situation.

Example: these Edison featured phonographs no longer have any photos attached = 4, 10, 14, 39, 44, 59, 80.

Yep, those were all hosted by Photobucket which recently disabled images if you don’t subscribe to their paid hosting.

Why would anyone use Photobucket, Google or any other website to post pictures here?

If you have the pictures on your computer, which you obviously took (unless you are posting pics of a machine that you don't own) and are savvy enough to upload and post them to some other site, it only takes a few seconds of your time to post them here... :?

It's like friends of mine who still use AOL to "get connected to the internet"...

Yes Photobucket died. I used it because the website I used for years, was an early free website hosting (tripod) And that site was built around 2000-2001, I used photobucket for many of the pictures because it did not take up space on the website builder page which was limited. Though did not use photobucket for post on TMF, I upload to this forum.
