Yes indeed. Over here they're as common as rain! I'm beginning to think that EVERY home in the British Isles had at least one 101 portable at some point, including the first models!Jwb88 wrote:But then I'm sure they're much more plentiful in the UK than California.

Re: What to do with this early HMV 101
I've decided I'm going to do this properly, might as well.
I've bought some new leatherette covering, it looks just like the original, however the base of the cabinet was pretty destroyed, I tried flattening it and repairing splits but I could not get it good really so I spent a few hours re making the base, made it out of MDF, seems close enough to what the original was made of, got it down to the right thickness and carved the grooves, looks alright, I think the top is salvagable, it should look good in the end, kept the original covering to use as templates for cutting out the new.

Re: What to do with this early HMV 101
I'm not going to claim perfection but it's certainly not too shabby
Using the originals as a template was a terrible idea, just did it all by scratch, it's probably not the same way HMV did it, one or two parts where I had to add bits because of mis-cutting but I reckon unless you knew it may be hard to know what's been done, going to dye the inside of the base black, attempt to remove the motor diagram from the old base, and apply it to this one then make a little label saying what's been done, I've covered guitar amplifiers, first time doing a gramophone though, will piece it all back together and do a couple touch ups tomorrow, pleased how the detailing came out
Also over estimated the amount of material needed, may end up using it on an amp or find another knackered portable

Very good job, you brought it back to life!
How was the replacement leatherette close to the original pergamoid? The original material is closer to paper than leather or leatherette, at least in my experience, and I couldn't find anything quite close to it yet.

Looking Sharp!
I tell you, that's one the nicest looking portables I've seen done...

Here's some re-assembled photos, still need a couple parts and tweaks, missing some screws, turntable clip, brake spring and handle but it's looking better than it did when I bought it in a carrier bag!
Had a bit of trouble with the hinge and getting stuff to line up, plugged a couple holes but seem to have gotten it close enough now

Congratulations! That looks great. I don't like portables very much, because I dread the work on the covering. You have done an awesome job bringing that case back from the brink.
