Pathé record question.

Post by JAR »

I have come across a Pathé Demonstration Record. It is cut inside out?
I have a 78 adapter for my DD C-19. If I use a sapphire ball with it,
will it play on the Edison?

The US Pathé demo record starts at the outside. A DD machine may be able to play it with an adapter, although I don't remember seeing one for Pathé records (several adapters were made to play lateral discs on Edison, like yours, but these will not play Pathés unless you can turn its diaphragm 90 degrees).

Then you just need one sapphire needle and you are set!

Yep, didn't someone have those for $40.00 on e-bay at one time.
I believe there was a post here?

There are several for sale, but you need to be careful when buying because some of these are not sapphire, but glass. It is not distinguishable from a sapphire (at least to me), but it will crack after a small number of plays, and start to eat away records. I would recommend to buy from a reiiabe source, there are reputable dealers in the US that sell these needles.

I thought since the Pathé Demonstration record was being discussed I would try to digitize the A side of my copy (which is in pretty poor shape, but does play). I used my phono cartridge setup for vertical recording with a 3 mil tip and had to use a lot of anti-skating to get the shallow grooves to track correctly. It seems to be rather softly recorded and because of that there is a lot of hiss I couldn't really remove without compromising the sound. Not the best sound of my recording and I probably need to learn more about how to digitize this type of record. But, for what it is worth here is the YouTube Video.

During the trombone demo there are a couple of grooves that look as though someone put either a steel needle of a bad sapphire needle down on the record. So, there is momentary distortion.

And here is the demo record played on the hardware it was intended to demo. Plus a math lesson.
