Did Jones & Hare Record "Since Henry Ford.." on Diamond Disc

Post by marco »

Hello everyone!

Still getting back into the hobby after getting sidetracked with jukeboxes for years. Never Lost my love for phonographs and their records, though.

I was going through my late issue diamond discs getting ready to finally send some to Donnie to copy and share with whoever might not have some of them and for him to raise funds to continue his work.

At one time I had a klepto friend who stole some of my late issue diamond discs. As I go through what I have left I keep thinking of titles that I may have used to have?

Did Billy Jones and Ernest Hare ever record "Since Henry Ford Apologized To Me" on Diamond Disc. Lost my entire library of books, brochures, etc due to a flooded basement years ago while I was away. Just seems that I had a copy of it at one time. I do have it on Victor Orthophonic; but when I play some of my lateral cut records it just seems to me sometimes that I had longer versions of the songs that may have been on the diamond discs that I lost.

If it was issued--does anyone have a copy to sell? Please PM about that but feel free to respond on the forum about my question.

Many Thanks!

Hi Mark,
Thanks for thinking of me!
Doing a brief search, I can't find any info on Edison recording it. Since they were also friends, this would seem to make sense.

There were a number of "Ford" related songs recorded, some were on Blue Amberol and Diamond Disc. "The Little Ford Rambled Right Along" and "Henry's Made A Lady Out of Lizzie" are 2 that come to mind. Perhaps you are confusing the titles?

Thanks for the answers and help.

Don't forget the flip side of the "Henry's Made A Lady Out Of Lizzie" which is "Poor Lizzie" on Diamond Disc. That may have very well been the record that I was thinking about.

Forgive me, Donnie (or Don if you prefer it) for taking so long to get records out to you. Have been debating with myself whether or not to go to Union; and have been trying to make a couple of deals on items that I want. I am a little slow; but always follow through. Will PM you as soon as I get a chance to go back through your list and to pull out "Singing In The Rain" for you to copy.

Best,
Mark

I don't know if "Since Henry Ford Apologized to Me" would have made it onto an Edison record...

I don't know how much final approval Old Deaf Tom still had over the catalog in late 1927, but he and Ford were good friends, and I don't think Edison would have appreciated the sharp humor contained in that song...

The lyrics are attributed to Billy Rose * (born William Samuel Rosenberg), and the song was recorded by Jones & Hare after Henry Ford released a letter in June 1927 under his signature, apologizing for dozens of Anti-Semitic articles which had run in his Dearborn Independent between 1920 and 1925. The apology was the outcome of a libel suit brought against Ford by Jewish attorney Aaron Sapiro.

It's a clever topical song, but I'm not sure Edison would have appreciated the humor at his friend's expense, however justified it might be in the hindsight of history.

It was released by the Happiness Boys on Victor( as noted in other posts), and appeared at least on Brunswick with Jimmy Hussey, and possibly other labels ?

:coffee:

* Billy Rose is also credited with having written the lyrics to another Jones & Hare hit: "Does the Spearmint lose its flavor on the bedpost over-night?"

Interesting enough that Ford bragged in later years that he authored the letter but never signed it.Also there is speculation that Ford wanted to pave the way for increased sales of the soon to be introduced model A

There is a downloadable Excel spreadsheet of all Diamond Disc titles, matrix numbers, etc. available for free from truesoundtransfers.de

A quick search through that database shows no hits for the title requested. The only occurrences of "Henry Ford" involve the special records Edison created for him, and the few releases by his "old time dance orchestra".
