Just took a gander at my own Victor early electrics. The highest numbered batwing that I have is an Oakland pressing of

20085

piano solos by Frank Banta

Anything higher than that? I love these lowest/highest number threads.

I'll have to look for the ones I've got to find the exact number where they switch over, but Canadian HMV Victor pressings stuck with the batwing label all the way through the 27000s and into at least the 20-1500 series, if that counts...

20-1733 is the highest I can find on ebay at the moment: https://www.ebay.com/itm/78-16BB-COMEDY ... SwwPhWltTl

No idea that Canadian Batwings went that high, either! Thanks!

I came into this thread late, but according to my sources, the first Victor electric recording issued was 19626, 2 sides by The Mask and Wig Club of the University of Pennsylvania. It was issued in Philadelphia. The first nationally issued Victor was 19630, Let It Rain, Let It Pour/All Aboard For Heaven by Meyer Davis' Le Paradise Orch. with a vocal by Billy Murray. 19626 was recorded in March, 1925 but the only information I have on 19630 is that it was on sale sometime in May. If some who reads this has access to the Victor Black Label Discography for this period, I would appreciate it if they will check on these numbers and post the info here.

Jim

Edit: in a quick check of my collection, I found 20081 to be my highest batwing. The labels seem to generally change to scroll after 20000, so could that have been the crossover point?

Thanks for the specific information about 20081. I appreciate it, especially as I continue to find early electrics "in the wild."

The highest number from the regular 10" Black label series I've seen or heard about on a Batwing label is 20101 recorded at the end of June, 1926.
