HMV 102 spring problem

Post by aledg1982 »

Hi all,
I decided to work with my HMV 102 motor because while playing the spring did a loud noise.
There was sticky grease and the spring was cracked.
I bought a new spring, I installed it but after few windings it slips unwinded.
I suppose it is a problem with the outer hook of the spring, I put it in and out three times (and my hands are suffering because it is so hard) but nothing.
Do you have any tricks to hook the spring in the outer rivet?
It is impossible to hook it just winding a lot, right?
Thank you

You're right, it is impossible to get the spring to hook onto the rivet by continuous winding. You have to hook the end on to the rivet and then give it a tug to make sure the edge of the pear-shaped hole in the spring is securely hooked behind the rivet. Keep pulling it tightly whilst winding the first couple of coils in, then it should be ok. I have come across cases where the rivet has worn away, so that there is no lip left on it, but it's very rare, and the only answer to that is a replacement spring drum.

Yes, I will remove the spring again and I will try to hook firmly to the rivet inside the barrel.
Thank you!!

The rivet can usually be rotated 180 degrees to present a new face to the spring eye hole :D

if the eye doesn't locate on the rivet the answer can often be FORCE , wind the motor till the spring " clicks" and then hit the rivet very hard with a hammer , this nearly always "jumps" the spring onto the rivet :D

you can also hammer the rivet inwards before trying to fit the spring to give enhanced purchase :D

Hello, I fixed the problem. I tightened the barrel in a vise in order to have the rivet fully available in the inner surface of the barrel and I was able to hook the spring easily!!
The motor now runs without problems!!
