"Frohliche Weihnachten" Blue Amberol translation request

Post by barnettrp21122 »

Hello All:
I came across this German Blue Amberol Christmas recording, from Berlin, 1910, of a childrens' choir singing "Silent Night," "O Come, Little Children" and "O, Sanctissima," with short recitations in-between.
I found it quite moving, thinking that this was done 108 years ago, before either of the world wars and that all the little voices have long been silent.
I would love it if any German-speaking members might have a go at translating the little poems the children recite. I'd love to play this cylinder at my church choir party this year with translation handouts!
Thanks for listening!
Bob Barnett

I cannot translate it, but it's one of my favorites.
A very heart warming record.

Hi Bob,

I found the text in German on the web and will try to translate it. But as I am not a native English speaking person, though with not too bad language skills, it could be a bit difficult to get it the right way. You shouldn't forget that these are poems and so words and expressions are used that usually you don't use. Also it is 100+ years old. The translation will allow people to understand what the kids were saying, but it surely won't sound as nice and "poem like" as the original ... nor will it rhyme. ;-)

Please send me an email for further communication.

Cheers,
Helmut

Many thanks to Helmut (max-phenol) for graciously supplying a nice translation to the childrens' poems.
