Who could have been the artists whose work 'costs us £20 to £100'? It was not until more than two years later (March 1902) that Caruso demanded the latter sum for his first recording session and, according to Fred Gaisberg, the London headquarters refused to authorise the payment. It is true that the Company's English lists already included some artists of considerable renown in the music-hall and variety field, such as Louis Bradfield, Maurice Farkoa and Albert Chevalier; I suppose they may have exacted substantial fees.

Oliver Mundy.

The £20 - £100 would refer to total production and distribution costs, not just artists' fees (and no doubt "optimised" for publicity!)
