I used kerosene for the initial clean and grease removal, then a Toluene based automotive parts cleaner for final clean up. It removes all and any staining from the old grease that the kero can't handle. Don't use the parts cleaner on the leather pad of the speed control at the governor, or the tiny one on the speed indicator as it affects the leather in a bad way.
