Announcements On Brown Wax Records

Post by Dave D »

Can announcements be used to date records? I have one that is announced from Edison's Laboratory and other Columbia records say New York and Chicago or New York and Paris. The Edison Lab one strikes me as being pretty early, or am I wrong? Is there a listing of when titles were introduced?
Thanks!

The valuable article which James has cited omits one stage in Columbia announcements, namely 'Sung/played by . . . . . for the Columbia Phonograph Company', without any reference to city-names at all. I have some examples of these which Kenneth Lorenz dates to late 1901 or 1902, so that they would seem to come immediately before the 'Columbia Record' period. They still play (as far as I can judge) at a fairly low speed, somewhere in the 120s.
