This is one of 4 commerative records produced by Berliner with a relief portrait in the central area and recorded grooves outside the relief portrait. This one commemorating the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. It originally came with a commerative box which included a wooden platter to allow play of this record. Since there is no spindle hole in the record due to the relief portrait, you need the wooden platter which has a recess to hold the record on top and a spindle hole cut in the undersurface which completely encompasses the central phonograph spindle, allowing the record to play on a standard period phonograph. More information can be found here at this web site. http://www.musicweb-international.com/F ... page18.htm

Alexandra, not Victoria.

In case anyone would like to hear the disc, here's one of my reproductions of this disc, being played on a period Berliner machine. The original disc was loaned by David Giovannoni and the video was made by Pedro Martinez (a member here)...

I also have the Wilhelmina plate available 8-)

My great grandfather Frederick Barnett, a policeman, was on duty at the Coronation and was awarded this commemorative medal :

Unsure where the link went, as I was curious to see what it sold for. The site shows it sold for 80 gbp + commission and VAT, here's the link, https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auct ... 1300e990d0.

The record was made by the Gramophone Company (His Masters Voice) which was originally Berliner. On the back of the record should be some recording angel logo's.

BTW the coronation date on the record is wrong Edward VII was not crowned on 26 June 1902.

The police medal is very clever, they just wrote 1902.

Its kind of a trivia / who wants to be a millionaire question. He was in fact crowned on 9 August 1902 because he had an abdominal abscess at the end of june that required immediate surgery - so the coronation was postponed.
