Hi guys, i been trying to research this Model E i have and was wondering what the difference is between the Model A and Model E and maybe what the value is? I know my Model E doesn't have an external horn but other than that i can't see a big difference. any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: Standard Talking Machine Model E
You nailed it... the Model E is an internal horn while the Model A is an external horn... I believe there is also a Model AA which is an open works phonograph.
Standard brand phonographs are generally cheaper than their "more famous" competitors. Although the Model E is more scarce than the Model A, the Model A is more desirable because of the external horn.
I'm not one to judge a price... and most people on this board would tell you "it's worth what you're willing to pay for it"... so me personally, assuming it's in working condition, wouldn't pay more than $200.

Thanks for the swift reply!
I would totally agree about pricing things. I have an antique store so i know how things go. I was kind of looking for a ball park price. I have about 20 to 25 old phonos and i am wanting to learn a LOT more about them! Again thanks for the reply it's greatly appreciated!

How do you come to have 25 phonos at once? Was it a collection?

Also, it's nice that your decal is in tact, nice and clear. The Standard decals on a lot of these machines are cracked and/or faded.

Btw, if anyone could tell me what that little one is or who made it, it would be greatly appreciated.

The Graphophone? That's a Columbia machine.
So, you've just had these laying around the ole antique store, huh?

Yea, pretty much.
Like i said, ive always liked them and know a little but i want to become knowledgeable about them, not just "know a little"... Usually when i get like this over something i obsess.. We have about 4 buildings full of antiques (mantiques). We have about 200 or so old radios to but they just don't do it for me like the old phonos...

I have one of those Standard Model E's. They are really cool machines. $200.00 is a good price for those machines. With the perfect decal and finish, I've seen them go for $300-350, when the economy was good. Another scarce internal horn Standard is a Model B. There is a picture of it in Eric Reiss's book under Chicago machines. I really love those oddball Columbia machines both external and internal horned ones.
