Re: Victor IV mystery
Assuming the cleaning and servicing was done well, and everything is properly adjusted, then like Jerry, I question the springs. I am not sure what "old but solid" means. I have attached a photo of an old spring and a new spring. The old spring (left) had lost some of its springiness after...

Re: Question about Victor Exhibition reproducers
A similar question was asked recently. See: https://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=48391&p=286755&hilit=victor+exhibition#p286755 1909 is the year of the change, but I don't know if the exact month and day or serial number range has been established. The VDB says round hol...

Re: Fiber needle wear
I thought the 'skin' should be on the outside... Examining the new-old-stock EMG Davey fibres and others I have here, they are cut that way... :?: I always understood this to be because, having dynamically levelled the gramophone (i.e. not with a spirit level, but for null tonearm swing on a dead w...

Re: Circassian Walnut VV-230 from Facebook Marketplace
What a surprise. A post about a Circassian Walnut machine that is actually Circassian!
You got a bargain that many of us only dream about. I am not typically a fan of lowboys, but in this case, I'll make an exception.

Re: Edison Fireside with Cygnet $1500 in Fayetteville NC
I tend to agree with VEF's assessment. I can remember when Firesides in excellent condition had asking prices in the $1200-1400 range, but that was over 20 years ago. Prices have softened since then. Seller does not appear to be a knowledgeable collector, as he places a 1905 date on the machine and ...

Re: How many portables do you have?
Hmmm ...
Here I thought I was the odd man out, but now I discover that I am not alone in my preference for the HMV 101 over the 102 for the same reasons listed by others.
They are both great machines, but the HMV 101 wins (for me).

Re: How many portables do you have?
Too many! I have at least 30 or so including the "mini" portables (cameraphones, Mikiphone, Excelda, etc.), the heavy HMV trans-portables (112, 113 & 118), the typical HMV 101s, 102s and Columbia and Victor machines plus others. One of the more interesting ones (to me at least) is a Gi...
