Re: "Colonial" portable on ebay.

The answer probably lies beneath the turntable, where there should be an ID plaque.
If I was interested in bidding I would have asked the question, but I am not.
One wonders how the seller knows it to be in "Full working order" when he has no winding handle.

Re: "Colonial" portable on ebay.

According to Dave Cooper's book on HMV portables, the 94 was a short lived export model using a 27040B motor and No.21 soundbox. It was supplied with a record tray.
It cost 100 Rupees in polished wood and 90 Rupees in brown leatherette. A canvas cover was an extra cost option.

Re: Norman Roland collection

If I had been administering Dr Roland's estate I would not have authorised the auction until all Covid restrictions had been lifted. Better arrangements for viewing, buying and collecting should result in better attendance and better results. As to why some auction firms do not publish results on li...

Re: Two EMG's etc

The general rule is, if a machine is capable of being played with the lid closed, close it. This minimises any needle chatter which is a problem with some soundboxes. HMV were aware of this with the 5a/5b soundboxes, hence the "Close lid whilst playing" transfer inside the lids of their la...

Re: Norman Roland collection

I had briefly considered bidding on the Edison Opera after Tim (Wagnerian), who lives nearer to the auction house than me, kindly offered to check it over during his appointment to view the sale. Once I had read the terms and conditions in detail I changed my mind. The arrangements for collection if...

Re: 102 PORTABLE GRAMOPHONE advertisement 1931.

That is an interesting find Alastair. I look forward to seeing it next time we meet.
There are several period advertisements for the 102 in Dave Cooper's book on HMV portables, but not this one.

Re: Two EMG's etc

There is viewing on Monday 10th May but it is by appointment only. I have requested an appointment to view but I don't expect to hear back until Tuesday at the earliest. I'm not in the market for an Opera myself (I'm lucky enough to own one already ) but would you, Epigramophone, like me to have a ...
