Re: HMV tabletop machine

Just checking in and saying a big "thanks!" to all so far. I'm learning a bit about these machines, up to now terra incognita for me. My friend who bought it is very excited about it, and I think I'll refrain from saying anything about the tonearm to him, at least for now. Is the HMV repro...

HMV tabletop machine

Anybody have words of wisdom about this machine? A friend overseas bought it, and he's asked me about it, but I know next to nothing about European production. It looks a lot like an equivalent to a Victrola IX to me, but that's about as far as it goes. I can say it has a His Master's Voice No. 4 re...

Re: Starr tabletop project

I'd do everything I could to preserve the decal and interior finish, even if the match to the eventual outside finish ended up being imperfect. That's what I did with my Edison C-250 and A-150 machines, both of which suffered from bad earlier refinishing endeavors by prior owners. If it's still avai...

Re: Early Pathé model. Help?

It's not a model 0, or at least it's not like the one I have, which is a far more primitive machine with a smaller motor. In fairness, I've seen mine called a "Democratique," not a "Diplomatique." A photo of the machine is here, as the header for my occasional column on TNT-Audio...

Columbia Masterworks discography/78 RPM community missing?

I just went to look up the Columbia Masterworks discography for a friend, and I think it's disappeared. I'm pretty sure it was on something called 78rpmcommunity.com, and that address now links to a GoDaddy front page stating "Get This Domain." Anybody know what's going on? I would really ...

Re: Caruso Pathé Cylinders

The guy selling the one on eBay had one more, in what appeared to be good condition, that went for around $1400 some time ago. The one on now has "a small crack" that extends about half the length of the cylinder. In other words, it's wrecked, but the seller seems to think he'll get almost...

Re: Free Victrola XI in Washington DC Area

According to the seller, the buyer was from Manassas and "seemed to know a lot about them." That's all I know other than that the lucky winner "paid the small asking price." Like you, I hope "seemed to know a lot about them" doesn't translate into "knew it's a comm...
