Anyone recognize this Columbia?

Looks like mahogany. A beauty. I found the photographs in a box lot of paper goods all phonograph related. There were also some needles that were sold by a shop in Jericho, LI, NY. Some of this was nostalgic for Forum members. And I gave some of the needles away. These photos date from the later Sev...

Re: PAPER HORN "BALMAIN"

1. So, what's this? Ginn developed the Wall of Sound before Phil Spector? Amazing. 2. Vivaldi--always such a bright, crisp clear sound. The man knew how to write for strings and the female voice. How they interweave is a marvel. 3. Aware of Leonard Cohen but not all that familiar. After Spielberg ca...

Re: An EMG,not quite what it seemed.

Interesting machine with an interesting history. May I comment on the case? It's simple lines, the sorta French feet, and how the veneers are used all remind me of Hepplewhite/Sheraton furniture. Bothe Hepplewhite and Sheraton reacted to the Baroque Chippendale by simplifying the lines and relying o...

Re: PAPER HORN "BALMAIN"

Well, I'm afraid I've ambushed Alistair's discussion of his Balmain horn to some other topic. Sorry about that. I did listen to some of the lieder on emgcr's channel. The German art song is definitely a wonder especially in the hands of such masters as Schubert and Schumann. The sound is impressive,...

Re: PAPER HORN "BALMAIN"

Hi Alistair: Thank you for your response. After I posted what I wrote I was afraid it might be taken in the wrong spirit. One needs to be extra careful on the Internet, and sometimes truly innocent statements/comments/remarks can be misinterpreted. But that was not the case here. I too am "reas...

Re: PAPER HORN "BALMAIN"

Dear Old Country Chemist: May I ask a personal question? Are you a Country Chemist who is Old? Or are you a Chemist from the Old Country? Possibly both? I have not gone through all 20 pages of this thread, but I did read your first post. My grandmother, a Macleod, was born in Manchester and came to ...

Re: Columbia Long Throat Reproducer

I'm taking this off the top of my head, so someone can correct me if I'm wrong. I believe what you have is Columbia's knock-off of Victor's Concert soundbox. Not common, as it was made for just a few years because Victor sued Columbia and won. If I may digress slightly. Benjamin Franklin didn't beli...

Re: Poorly presented Ebay listings

In addition to poorly presented items, I'd like to add outlandish prices. There are just too many items on eBay--and I don't mean just talking machines--that are wildly overpriced. I think many of these sellers ain't totin' home a full bag of groceries, if you catch my drift. As someone has noted ab...

Re: My Monarch MS

Thanks to everyone for the kind words.

Actually if I found a front-mount Zon-O-Phone for the right price, I'd be sorely tempted to buy another keeper. Or maybe some real early Victors, pre-dog ones. Who knows what will turn up.
