Re: I don't like it ................... except when ......

Over many years, I have used different machines and technologies to play shellac records. This includes acoustic playback on earlier and later (Orthophonic) machines and modern variable speed turntables with various sizes of diamond stylii. Certainly the best playback of a specific disc is to choose...

After searching on and off for many years, a decade ago I acquired and lovingly restored a Capehart Deluxe M400 from 1941. In case you do not know what this Capehart is, it was the peak of luxury for 78 collectors in those days as it plays up to 20 10" or 12" discs both sides in sequence. ...

Re: What’s old is new again: the cure!

From the look of the dress and the advertisments, it looks to be from about 1907, a good eleven years before the pandemic. They were affected the 1907 recession. Roosevelt was doing his Trust Busting and fighting Standard Oil and next year WJ Bryant would be running against WH Taft. By 1918-1919 and...

Re: Last Living 78 RPM only Artist

But Andrews, Horne and Pressley made 78's during the LP era. This thread was to include pre LP (1948) artists.

Re: Business Must Go On

The second label infers that it is specially imported and not in the Electrola catalog. EMI did the same in the '40's with exports to the US and Canada. A Special Record sticker was overlaid across the Nipper logo because RCA Victor had American rights to the logo. Did you know that Panasonic subsid...

Re: Business Must Go On

I do not think it has anything to do with censorship. Deutsche Gramophon was separated from The Gramophone Company parent during WW1. DG carried on and The Gramophone Company re-established itself in Germany under the Electrola label. It is the Nipper logo which is in contention for I believe DG ret...

Re: For Sale $500 - 18,000 78rpm disc collection in Southen Ontario

I did not expect the responses to be overwhelming. The records have been up on FaceBook Marketplace for many weeks. It provides a good measure of the interest that even at this easonable price which could possibly be negotiated, there is no interest. I have picked up collections before (not nearly t...

Re: For Sale $500 - 18,000 78rpm disc collection in Southen Ontario

I am not sure if this is the remnants of Steve Barr's collection. I disassociated it but it may be. The seller said that it was an amalgamation of other collections. Nevertheless it looks as if the collection has been minimally picked through and I suspect there are quite a few gems. I know there is...
