Re: Please Help - HMV Gramophone

As HMV130 noted, the angle of the sound box (reproducer) is definitely wrong. It should look more like this: Capture.JPG Also, I'm wondering if the tonearm's crook (front portion) is too stiff. Remove the sound box and make sure that it moves freely up and down . If it's too stiff, it can cause the ...

Re: Were these 4-7s ever sold this way or is this a "repair"?

As Skihawx noted, this is a later replacement, probably done because the original tonearm support and perhaps sound box were damaged due to pot metal issues. Interestingly, though, one of the Orthophonic style cabinets WAS fitted with the old style components, the VV-4-1 -- http://www.victor-victrol...

Re: Victor VV 2-35

Maybe it's wishful thinking but I think it's better: https://youtu.be/Pp3zbMJrjSc Happy Weekend! It definitely sounds better, at least the "Good News" side does. I don't hear the raspy sound I heard in the earlier video. Don't know what to say about the needle bar pivot. Ideally, it shoul...

Re: Victor VV 2-35

Hopefully Carlos is right, but if it's the sound box, and I suspect it is, there's little you can do. But, given that, you might try removing the sound box from the tonearm, by unscrewing the locking screws, and then shake it to make sure there's nothing loose rattling around inside. If you don't he...

Re: Victor VV 2-35

One thing I'll tell you not to do and that's to try to dissemble the reproducer or sound box. All the parts are press-fitted together, and cannot be taken apart. (These are virtually identical, in design, to the HMV 16 sound box.) Also, a conventional Orthophonic sound box cannot be fitted to the to...

Re: Sound Box Help

Curiouser and curiouser... Victor's design of the no4 wasn't aimed to a particular new line of machines as hmv did? But I've seen it fitted to a new portable (2-30 and 2-60) that looked as having a substantial new internal horn.... But the vv page http://www.victor-victrola.com/2-60.htm for the 2-6...

Re: Acoustic Era Vocalists & Music in the Electric Era

I don't think any careers were "destroyed" abruptly because of the electrical recording process, as was the case when talking pictures took over from silent films--1929 seems to have been the landmark year. But, I do know, base on what I've read, that many of the old timers, such as Billy ...

Re: Sound Box Help

Victor, itself, sold the Victor #4 sound box as an upgrade component--circa late 1925/early 1926--for those who wanted to get more out of the then newly introduced electrical recordings without opting for an Orthophonic Victrola model. That would probably be the most authentic option if you can find...

Re: Victrola Consolette

I had the one of the first Consolette models to be equipped with a two spring motor--it still had the old style tonearm support without the overhang--and I also remember that it was a fantastic performer for its size. (My 4-40 has considerably more bass response--especially noticeable on pipe organ ...

Re: Wanted: VV 1-90 Back bracket & Tonearm

I now know that a tonearm and back bracket from a VV 4-7 or VV 4-40 will work on my VV 1-90. If anyone on the forum has this setup and would like to sell it please let me know, it will be appreciated. Gene Hi Gene: I sent you a private message about a tonearm with support (in need of TLC) I spotted...
