Re: The MAL sharpener

I got my hands on a MAL sharpener yesterday, and boy is it a breeze to use compared to my Universal! Not sure one should be that excited about a needle sharpener, but I am :D Beautifully constructed piece of kit I couldn't find much in terms of history online, so hoping someone here could shed more...

Re: An EMG,not quite what it seemed.

Yes indeed, I think many that were not converted in the fifties may well have met that fate as technology "advanced". I suppose the horns were the weakest part, especially if they were subjected to a damp atmosphere. Paper does not like to get wet............

Re: An EMG,not quite what it seemed.

Thank you very much Inigo. YouTube does a pretty good job these days but cannot reproduce "holographic sound" through loudspeakers in my opinion. Listening directly in front of an EMG horn is pure magic.

Re: An EMG,not quite what it seemed.

You are very kind Andy, thank you so much. It is all such fun and, of course, the quality of sound is so dependent upon your absolutely wonderful thorn needles. Please don't stop feeding a hungry world ! We should all be lost without them. Your comment "Our favourite entertainment come power cu...

Re: An EMG,not quite what it seemed.

Thank you for your kind comments and who knows how close the original horn was to WW2 activities ! I am afraid the horns are not readily available, primarily due to the worldwide demand being so small. I also took the decision many years ago only to reconstruct complete gramophones. The original pro...

Re: An EMG,not quite what it seemed.

Interesting machine with an interesting history. May I comment on the case? It's simple lines, the sorta French feet, and how the veneers are used all remind me of Hepplewhite/Sheraton furniture. Bothe Hepplewhite and Sheraton reacted to the Baroque Chippendale by simplifying the lines and relying ...

Re: An EMG,not quite what it seemed.

Well, Strobedisc kindly agreed to sell the empty wooden case to me and here, some two and a half years later, is the situation following a full restoration and return to original specification---and what it sounds like with new EMG Xb Oversize horn with GRP (fibreglass) bell. The initial part of the...

This may help with the deconvolution ?

Re: PAPER HORN "BALMAIN"

Are EMG machines an acquired taste? Those huge horns seem to menacingly loom over you ready to suck you into a black hole or into another dimension. Ha ! Yes, they do indeed suck you into another dimension but they are never menacing unless you consider "holographic" sound difficult to ta...
