Re: Playing to the carpet.

Physicist, Thanks for the examples of your spectral analysis that confirm my anecdotal observations with my own HMV193. I've found much research on-line of audio engineers attempting to overcome the directional nature of acoustic horns with the aim of preserving both fidelity and volume for listener...

Re: Playing to the carpet.

This interesting advert actually begs the question; is the legendary sound from the Expert/EMG machines due to superior acoustics or the fact that their listener's heads are generally closer in line with their horns? Given the highly directional nature of horns, a technical comparison, a controlled ...

Perhaps it would be useful, if not in its current dimensions, but as a pattern to enlarge or even as bones to build upon to fit your existing outer horn. htt...

Re: A concert in the park.

Carlos, Your observation about people in the not too distant future being amazed by LP records has already come to pass for me! Annually, for a Boy Scout Music Merit Badge, I bring an HMV 102 to a meeting of 11-16 year old boys, most of whose parents, in their 40's, only remember CDs! The kids stand...

Is this, what looks like a crack in the casting, normal? I've never handled one.

Re: Columbia portables..the endless enigma?

In retrospect, all of this uncertainty makes perfect sense. I suspect the serial numbers applied to specific machines were used as a record of parts used or included per unit, for reference for replacement parts if needed in the future. A record of the quantity of units manufactured and sold could b...

Re: Cole Porter's "You're the Top" Lyrics

Inigo!

Thanks so much! These appear to be US lyrics since I don't see the British lines previously suggested or as sung on my HMV recording. Nonetheless, delighted to read them.
