Some of the b-side etched/pressed graphics are wonderful intricate designs.

They could have been produced by laser-guided cnc machines (more accurate and repeatable than the old guy in the back room), but that technology wasn't invented until almost a century later.

I don't think test pressings would require writing on them. They might press the record then evaluate it immediately and make adjustments, in which case they would know exactly what the record is and wouldn't need to write because it was intended for temporary use only.
