What is this?

This is advertised as a phonograph, but the pictures don't make sense. It looks like a french cylinder machine, but if it is, what is missing and how would it operate?

Maybe someone with an original could post some pics for comparison...

This picture purports to show an original Sears base (I stand corrected, they were nickel plated cast iron, not brass).

Martin, without seeing your base in person, it is hard to tell. What metal does it appear to be made of? I have seen only a couple of originals and a number of replicas. The originals were made of nickel plated brass and had deep, defined decorative details. The replicas were copied and cast from or...

I think that part of the problem is that there are many people in the collecting community and even unknown to the collecting community who, over many years, hoarded hundreds/thousands of phonographs and saved them from scrap drives.
