Some day I plan to buy a wine rack and mercilessly turn it into a phonograph!

Re: I don't like it ................... except when ......

It has to be said that longer classical works such as symphonies, concertos and complete operas are unsuited to the 78 format. CD's have their uses but for complete operas I want pictures as well as sound, so they have to be on DVD for me. I also insist on DVD's set in the period the composer inten...

Re: I don't like it ................... except when ......

OK, I'll play: I don't like to listen to music recorded before 1948.....except when it's on its original format. "Pecking order" for me, most favored down, is as follows: cylinder, if originally so recorded (i.e., 2 min or 4 min wax, celluloid only if not a dub) Vertical cut disk Lateral 7...

Re: For Sale $500 - 18,000 78rpm disc collection in Southen Ontario

I did not expect the responses to be overwhelming. The records have been up on FaceBook Marketplace for many weeks. It provides a good measure of the interest that even at this easonable price which could possibly be negotiated, there is no interest. I have picked up collections before (not nearly ...

Re: Early Mandolin Recordings

Welcome! Do you collect cylinders? A couple of brown wax mandolin cylinders are up on eBay right now (from France, with all the frightening implications for price that go with that): https://www.ebay.com/itm/174747238091?hash=item28afbf3ecb:g:1xUAAOSwFU9ghtjg https://www.ebay.com/itm/174747425893?ha...

Re: Duruflé organ music

Somehow, I suspect these may be pretty thin on the ground in Spain or the UK--they're not exactly commonplace here in the United States--but if you want to hear some really excellent organ recording on 78s, keep an eye open for the ones Robert Noehren released on the Audiophile label in the late 194...

Re: Could someone explain?

Well, only the buyer can say with certainty, but at a guess, somebody wanted the parts for other machines. Certainly it's not a working machine and can't be made into one, but the mandrel could have value by itself, being a Pathé standard size with slip-on salon size sleeve, and the motor looks good...

Re: Duruflé organ music

You're most welcome--I hope you'll enjoy the linked article. Not by any stretch of the imagination on the same order of quality as Tournemire or Durufle or Widor, let alone Bach or Buxtehude (OK, I'll confess, I love baroque era organ but am less enthusiastic about Romantic), but Edison released a f...
