Maybe they saw one of those fancy black Chinese design Victrolas and liked the look, so replicated it without the Chinese paintings...

I was there three weeks ago, but the museum wasn't open... however, the shop portion was amazing.

Post a pic of your current mandrel. I would like to see how pitted it is. I have been able to remove pitting by putting the mandrel shaft in a drill and while rotating it, place it against a belt sander. When done, polish it back to a shiny finish...

The best things I found inside a Diamond Disc machine were a small leather bag full of $20 gold pieces, a Bettini attachment and reproducer along with a pink Lambert cylinder and a half eaten sandwich from Subway... :)

If you want a relatively inexpensive, but great little machine for just playing 78s, look for a VV-50 in good condition in the $200-$350 range. Mahogany will be cheaper, but an oak one will hold its value and is a good starting place...

If you buy it for $225, then add $60-100 in parts, plus whatever labor is involved - when finished you will end up with a nice but relatively common machine worth approx. $200...

The tonearm pictured does not look original to the machine. I think it would have been mounted in the rear of the turntable on what appears to be the tonearm mount... It looks like an easy (relatively) restoration using generic parts. The tonearm mount looks familiar, but not sure from what machine...
