The 32 system incorporating the internal conduit works well with Wilson and EMG external horns, the only downside being that it was made of thin-wall steel which allows some unwanted resonances. If the conduit is heavily lagged the acoustic result is very little different from the full EMG experience---other things (soundbox etc) being equal.

And the comparison using the correct HMV horn but still with the two-spring EMG soundbox.

Indeed this is true, Graham, but I suppose it's worth remembering that the HMV was designed to have a thin steel horn attached to it, which in itself has the same unwanted resonances so lagging the conduit or manufacturing it from a less resonant material was never realistically an option at the time.

Also, the HMV Models 31 and 32 appeared at the same time as the re-entrant range had been introduced so unlike say EMG, this design (or refinement of it) wasn't where the acoustic development was happening. As good as the '32' was, it wasn't anywhere near as good as an HMV 192 or 511 (cabinet models with No. 4 sound-box), let alone the incoming 163, 193 and 202 models.

Interesting! It would appear that the Seymour tonearm model might well be earlier than 1928 since the EMG advert’ in July 1927 (see above---page 2 of this post) refers to …..“the E.M.G. Hand-made Tone Arm, specially designed for the Panharmonic Horn (this arm contains an adjustable air space resonating chamber)”.....which would suggest the goose-neck arm with Quincke tube or do we think both models were offered at the same time ? There is some confusion because of the reference to the heavy “back casting” which could refer to the Seymour external cast iron bracket or the internal cast bronze conduit in the Mk VIII
For sure the Seymour tonearm model is a lot earlier. The back bracket reference is confusing.
The Wilson horn was initially used on the Schoolhouse HMV where it fits snugly and is quite stable whereas on the HMV 32 it sounds better because of the conduit but is top heavy and easily falls over. Both principals used on the HMV before any E.M.G. Percy Wilson must have designed the fitting on the horn to fit the readily available HMV models.

How do we identify what model EMG this is? The address on one of the labels under the lid is: 11 Grape St, London, but we can’t find any tag stating a specific model number. The horn bell is about 30 inches in diameter and it has an electric motor.

That is a very nice Xb. It is possible you will find a number stamped into the wooden deck-board underneath the turntable. However, if the original specification used a wind-up spring motor, the number can sometimes get lost when conversion to electric operation was carried out. EMG were at 11 Grape Street from 1929 to 10th April 1948. Do you know the history of this instrument ? It would be good to have photographs under the lid.
