This HMV Red 102 on YouTube has a number 16 soundbox AND A SERIAL number 51 ! Noted by the uploader , I find it difficult to believe that this Red 102 is no 51 in the sunken motor series as I would have thought the earliest ones would be black and this more likely indicates a renumbering of the the wooden motor board series from 000001 , although it doesn't seem to have an autobrake on off switch which the sunken motors don't have either , but are there other early 102 motorboard models without this feature , and was the manual brake a later addition ?

Re: HMV 102 production numbers
Are you trying to say 76859 has the early-style auto-brake?
That would be anomalous, since 63326 has the later style.

Red Leather 78659, which I own, has the later style autobrake. The earlier style proved unreliable and was discontinued after little more than a year, but the metal motor board with the sunken motor was retained until it was replaced by the wooden version a couple of years later.

Re: HMV 102 production numbers
Great.
To get back on topic, though, let’s revisit the original question, which was:
How many hmv 102's with the universal autobrake were produced, as i understand they were only produced for 9 months.
Is there any source of production numbers?
So we are looking for a machine with a serial earlier than 63326 with the second style autobrake, and later than 30941 with the first style autobrake.

"Is there any source of production numbers?"
Yes it is called the EMI archive trust https://www.emiarchivetrust.org/
I am sure they will let you study their archive
so was the HMV 102 with the early brake HMV 102 A , not referenced as such
Change the brake but keep the sunken motor so you get 102 B not referenced as such
New wooden board 102 C ?

Re: HMV 102 production numbers
Here is an early HMV 102 I think.
I just thought that this number might be useful just to add to those you have.
Oh, and someone thought the early auto brake was worth keeping ! (Very sad it was taken apart though I think).

Yes, that one appears to be within the range of early 102's with the first style autobrake. Our latest number so far is still 30941.

Re: HMV 102 production numbers
This appears to be one.
I think it may just 'fill in the gaps' a little bit but hopefully helps with the list.
Quite a low number again it seems.

Re: HMV 102 production numbers
Thanks - so now we have:
102s with the early autobrake (I've deleted the "1020" prefix):
2879
4744 (also typo'd as 4774)
5718
7553
12379
30941
Earliest 102 with the next version of brake:
63326
Still looking to narrow the gap between 30941 and 63326.

Assuming they didn't start to renumber from 00001 with the new brake , they sold thousands of these machines as noted by the number 836859 , so between 1932 and 1936 they made nearly a million machines ! 250,000 a year 1
