How many hmv 102's with the universal autobrake were produced, as i understand they were only produced for 9 months.

Is there any source of production numbers?

Probably not, or the guy that wrote the book on the HMV portables likely would have cited it.

I'd guess that serial number observation is the only way to get an estimate. We might be able to assume sequential numbering, so if enough people have examples it might work.

Here are the serials of my HMV portables:

101: 28785
102 (no letter suffix, with first auto-brake): 102030941
102D: 78027

I'm going to pull the prefix "1020" off the first-style 102, which gives this sequence:

28785
30941
78027

I like the way the 101 and first 102 sync up, and it's not unreasonable to say about 47k units were produced between 1931 (early 102) and just post war (102D).

Will all you other HMV portable owners please go get your serials for us? Just slip the circlip off the spindle and pull off the platter to reveal the number plate.

My French 101 (La Voix de son Maitre) is 8200C. This was the only number I could find, and it was stamped into the wooden motor board. This one has no Ivorine plaque. I'm not even sure if that number will be of any use, but there it is.

I will check my other 101 tomorrow; it's in a box stored elsewhere.

On the motor deck under the turntable is the serial number 102H b/18 90674.
The model "H" was introduced in March 1953. This Gramophone can be dated to 1954 because in 1936 HMV introduced a date system for all their products, "B" was 1936 and "B/1" 1937 - hence b/18 is 1954.

Model: C102 E Serial Number: B/9 70422 , going by Ian Calderbank's blog this must have been made in 1947 and the serial number for the Model E implies that the numbering started at again 00001 / does it not
