I have never understood why a special compressed felt was used instead of the conventional rubber gaskets on the re-entrant sound boxes

Interesting. I've never come across rubber gaskets on any re-entrant sound box. I'm not sure what was used on the American Orthophonic reproducers?.

With all this time on my hands, I am currently rebuilding two 5a boxes using parts from an "Indian" 5a from ebay. The gaskets are all pressed felt. I ordered some rubber gaskets from the US only to find they are about 2mm larger in diameter for the 5a. Very annoying as they cannot even be cut down to size. I'm guessing the Orthophonic boxes are just that bit larger, can anyone confirm this?

The HMV 5 gaskets should be 57mm . The ones I got for the Orthophonic are 59mm
