Upholstered/painted HMV 156

Post by nostalgia »

Sharing some photos, a HMV model 156 that is up for sale, upholstered. I thought you would like to have a look, also because I could not find any photos of the HMV 156 on the forum.
I also can see a small hole beside the winding key, whatever can that be. I am always sensitive to holes in this area...

What a strange confection!

The extra hole is almost certainly the original one - it has been re-motored. That isn't an HMV turntable.

That feels creepy without even touching it.

Yes, Orchorsol, it must have been re-motored. In total they have done much to destroy the machine. A Garrard turntable?
I am uoploading a photo of how a genuine HMV 156 motorboard.

Not only has it been re-motored by courtesy of Garrard, but the turntable appears to be a 10 inch one. The soundbox and the brake are also not original.

The turntable rim and winding handle don't look like Garrard to me. Possibly reminiscent of Paillard but not exactly like anything I'm familiar with.

Is this a new sport, destroying HMV model 156 machines?
I share the photos as a general warning really, how bad it can be...

I hope not. The 156 was HMV's version of the Victrola Consolette, and is an undervalued machine which performs very well.

Yes, a version of the consolette, but with the thin swan neck tonearm and the no4 mica sb, and exponential tinplate horn.. The Victor consolette did carry the orthophonic sb and horn?
