I must own up to being the buyer. I decided on Thursday to put a bid in for it. Whether it is a wise purchase or not time will tell. If the diaphragm is not repairable, in the short term my thinking is I could rebuild it with a mica diaphragm, although the aim is to obtain an aluminium diaphragm soundbox.

Well done Iain---you have a bargain Sir ! I was anticipating a much higher price. You have a lovely item completely correct for your great gramophone which I am sure will produce much good sound happiness when restored.

Hi Iain, I agree with Graham, you have a bargain there. Just think how many hours it would take, and the cost, to make a new brass soundbox-a lot more than you paid I am sure, and you have the genuine item! I hope before long that you can obtain an aluminium diaphragm for it, and enjoy comparing the mica box against the aluminium diaphragm box.
I also thought it would fetch quite a bit more than that. I sold one some years ago, and it fetched a substantially higher sum.

My ebay purchase arrived a couple of days ago and I have started on the overhaul. As can be seen in the following photographs the diaphragm is well and truly perforated, but I am really grateful that Chunny has generously said he is sending me a replacement. Judging by the gunge on the inside of the body and the corrosion of the diaphragm I guess it must have been sitting in a damp shed for some time.
Interestingly there are no lock nuts on the spring set screws, just what appears to be a thin felt washer above and below the spring eye.

Wonderful to see (the state of the diaphragm less so of course)! Do please keep us posted.

Meanwhile on the subject of EMG writings, I happened across this: https://archive.org/details/TMR46/page/n3/mode/2up - for greater ease I've also compiled it into a document, attached. The major part of it seems to be a sort of precursor to EMG's 'Book of the Fibre Needle' (written later by Balfour Davey).

What's the diaphragm diameter ?

Just measured it up. It's 42mm diameter.
