Were any soundboxes designed to screw-fit directly onto tone arms or the elbow of a horn I wonder ?
Maybe some of the very early Front Mount gramophones ?

No, primarily because it would be difficult to make sure they ended up in the correct orientation once they were screwed together... Early front mount machines used slip fit leather elbows or brass elbows for that reason...
