Portable Gramophone - Strange Hole ?

Post by poodling around »

I can't figure out why this hole exists / what it was for.

It seems as if it was an original feature maybe.

Does anyone know what the hole was for ?

I know you are familiar with the Columbia portable machines that have a winding handle that folds into an elliptical hole in the case. Well, this is exactly the same, except that in this case the hole to take the grip of the winding handle is on the edge of the lid.

Thank you VERY much Barry.

That makes complete sense - and I would never have guessed in a million years !

Very interesting indeed.
