HMV 203 sold cheaply on eBay

Post by Orchorsol »

Someone got a thundering bargain a few days ago - £25! It looks as though it may have been a buy-it-now, and someone snapped it up very quickly.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/gramophone-P ... 7675.l2557
(Posted in this section because this is no longer a live auction, and merely for interest.)

Information from the listing, for posterity:
Needs plenty of TLC.
Veneer has gone on too and sides.
Turntable goes round, but stops when the needle is put on it. Comes with a few records.
Collection in person only.
Cash on collection welcome.

Restore or flip? The lucky buyer cannot go wrong. Here is some history of the supplying dealer :

Treasures can still be found :clover:
I would love to see the restoration process of this veneer.

Curiosity, what's this thing behind the record cleaner? Seems to be inserted in the top board...

Looks to be some unrelated clasp or whatever, here's another image from the auction:

Ah, yes... Seems to be some kind of clip, which has been left in the machine. Curious thing. Seems like a rare hair clasp for women... :D :D

Well, the excitement is over. It DIDN'T apparently sell as the owner made an error handing the reins to an Ebay seller who couldn't even manage to list it properly when it states the make and model on the inside! :?

The seller negotiated a sale at £90 and thought he'd done really well but according to him, the owner confiscated it back when she saw what he was listing it for. Its been languishing in her garage for 30 years and the seller reckons it'll be heading back in there for another 20!

It doesn't stack up to me. The levels of incompetence are extraordinary. If the owner knows what it's worth, why entrust the sale to an clueless Ebayer who clearly doesn't and hasn't been informed by the owner? And if its been in her garage since 1992, the owner clearly doesn't value it as a cherished item, only a financial one, in which case why not flog it back when a) the prices were peaking and b) before 30 years of damp almost destroyed the cabinet?

As I said, the levels of stupidity, naivety and incompetence know no bounds. Resting back in her damp garage indefinitely, this 203 will gradually go the same way as the Titantic on the ocean floor.
