Received this yesterday from PayPal about their new policy:

That's pretty self-explanatory, but NOT in line with "industry practice". In a normal retail sale, when a customer pays with a credit card, the merchant fees are credited back to the seller when a return credit occurs. As did PayPal for 25 years.

That's disgraceful. I receive funds by PayPal regularly these days for thorn needle orders, which I doubt will ever need the refund facility, but I also sell on eBay and as we all know, rogue buyers and scammers can lead sellers a merry dance there. One can only hope that enough sellers complain or vote with their feet, and that PayPal come to their senses as a result.

It has motivated me to again accept credit cards directly. I am in the process of activating my merchant credit card account, which has been dormant for many years since PayPal was so handy to use.

Actually, I have on average only about one return per year; can't remember when the last one was. But the arrogance of PayPal to adopt such a policy, and then lie about it being "industry standard" is galling.

how can you stop using Paypal if you sell on Ebay ? as you can't list on Ebay unless you accept Paypal .

I don’t think that’s the case any longer.

For eBay sellers, eBay now offers an alternative to being paid by PayPal, its called Managed Payments. The problem of not getting your fees back on any refunds is not an issue when using this new form. It's also a fraction of a penny cheaper on the fees. Not sure how you set it up, I called them a month or two ago to have them set it up. See link below for info. Btw, you still use PayPal when purchasing on eBay when you have Manage Payments set up.

There's a caveat to this, though, if you habitually sell multiple items to the same buyer like record sellers often do. Instead of PayPal's 33c per transaction fee, eBay MP will charge you that fee PER ITEM. When I sold on eBay I'd quite often have the same buyer win 10 or 20 records in an auction cycle where I'd sell maybe 100 records with almost every buyer winning multiple auctions. In cases like this that's a HUGE fee jump over the Pal.

Also, be forewarned that if you habitually use GSP, that's going to be eliminated when MP goes sitewide. eBay will be offering a different service for that but with NO real protections for the seller even if the reshipper screws something up.
