HMV Junior Grand (Dutch?) on UK eBay

Post by epigramophone »

Surely one of the most drab and uninspired HMV cabinets, this eBay offering has several detail differences from the examples pictured in "His Master's Gramophone". There were variations of this model not catalogued in the UK, and the HMV plaque is in Dutch, so perhaps this is one of them.

I think it's actually kind of pretty! The carving makes it look much more recent than it is.

Even such a plain cabinet evidently had variations. I used to own this one, sold it to a local collector. This pic is pulled from the auction listing of his estate some years back.

The description claims a 1930s date. The construction looks more like a very early Victrola design much like a VTLA. Comments?

The Junior Grand was catalogued in the UK from 1909 to 1911, and in differing versions outside the UK until about 1914.
At the time it was the cheapest HMV cabinet model, and to my eye it looked it.
To me the only positive thing about it is the low starting price, which at the time of posting has attracted one bid.
A UK example was sold at an SAS auction in February 2017 for £100, from a deceased collector's estate which I helped to clear.

Another version, a French La Voix de son Maître I bought from the grandson of the original owner.
