As a matter of curiosity, would someone please tell me why there's a hole in the front of the case? I think I've seen the same thing on other Gems (or maybe it's only the red ones??).

I think you're asking about what looks like a blemish in the front of the machine slightly below and to the right of the decal. Correct? If so, that's where, I believe, one end of the governors pivots. It's dark because it was well oiled or greased and collected who knows what over many years. I didn't take mine apart to look in the motor cavity but I think it's one end of the governor.

The governor pivot, (bearing), protrudes from the right side, (crank side), of the motor housing, not in the front side. All non-drip-pan Gems in my collection have that hole in front. I believe it's the screw hole where the pivot is mounted for the speed control arm.
