As a matter of curiosity, would someone please tell me why there's a hole in the front of the case? I think I've seen the same thing on other Gems (or maybe it's only the red ones??).

I think you're asking about what looks like a blemish in the front of the machine slightly below and to the right of the decal. Correct? If so, that's where, I believe, one end of the governors pivots. It's dark because it was well oiled or greased and collected who knows what over many years. I didn't take mine apart to look in the motor cavity but I think it's one end of the governor.

The governor pivot, (bearing), protrudes from the right side, (crank side), of the motor housing, not in the front side. All non-drip-pan Gems in my collection have that hole in front. I believe it's the screw hole where the pivot is mounted for the speed control arm. Probably oily because the hole most likely aligns with the governor friction plate, which tends to fling oil.
