Following a throat operation at the end of the 1908 opera season, Caruso embarked on his 1909 concert tour of Britain to try out his voice before returning to opera.
He and his entourage travelled the country in a special train, and when the tour reached Blackpool he was heard by the young Tom Burke, later to become famous as "The Lancashire Caruso". Whilst studying in London Burke was auditioned by Caruso, who advised him to study in Italy. Burke took the advice and was chosen by Melba to open the first post war season at Covent Garden with her in 1919.
He is now largely forgotten, but his biography, long out of print, reads like an adventure story. His early recordings for Columbia can be hard to find but are well worth seeking out.
