EMG Mk VIII on UK eBay.

Post by epigramophone »

The buyer will need to source the correct soundbox, but the Wilson type horn looks in reasonable shape.
The fuzzy image is due to the seller's poor photography.

I think watching this go will be a spectator sport for most of us! 26 on the watch list thus far (myself included not that I have the funds for such a thing!)

Am offering prayers to the deities of Historic Phonographic Preservation for it to land in a home that will give it suitable care!

(Unsure of the suitable burnt offerings for such - so am sticking to incense with a hint of non-graphinated bearing grease accompanied by "OMMMMMMMMMMMM"S throat sung in the style of HMV hiss, varying between Em and G)

Tonearm tracking seems a bit off -- at least to me. :monkey:

The soundbox (not EMG) appears to be fitted askew, but otherwise the way the tonearm terminates at an angle (i.e not at right-angles) is correct - EMGs had the most advanced tracking geometry, unlike any other acoustic gramophones. However - it's hard to tell from the poor photos, but the tonearm looks as though it may be angled downwards which could be a problem. Also the crease in the horn is worrying - although the seller states that it supports its weight as shown in a photo, it could be a serious weak point prone to giving way in future, and will be difficult to strengthen or repair.

Here are the relevant pages from the EMG handbook ("The book of the fibre needle" by H.B.Davey) on the subject of tracking. As Orchorsol says, the soundbox is incorrectly positioned on the tonearm. In the correct position the offset would be optimal at 3 ¾ inches as designed by Percy Wilson.

Back on eBay again description is now getting slightly dramatic / paranoiac but new pics show horn in a good light :D

in response to an enquiry I should say that the horn has been stood on the bell end on a flat surface for about 40 years. As you can see from the photograph it is self supporting.

Also I THINK the new photos show that the concern over whether the tonearm might have a droop was unfounded. As always, better photos help massively! IMHO it's probably a reasonable buy now, even factoring in hundreds of pounds for an appropriate soundbox. I wish the seller luck in finding a buyer. Sadly even desirable things like this can seem mysteriously blighted once they've been round eBay multiple times. If it were me I'd take it off for a couple of months and try again with even better, fresh photos.

I must admit I was almost tempted enough to start looking what I could sell, I like the wilson horn machines, but it seems the VIII has sold, the seller having accepted an offer, I wonder if we shall see it again in the new owners hands any time soon
