A local (Aurora, Oregon) auction house is offering a photo of Thomas Edison in his shop including the negative. Nothing in the photo says phonograph, but it is Edison. Thought it might be of interest here...

Wow, a BFT with 2/4 minute gearing! Wonder how much it'll fetch at auction's end?

They are not selling it as any type of original. They don't even mention sizes. I only see it as a continuous tone negative and a contact print of poor quality. Just saying, I don't think its has any collector value, and at $160.

Here's the same image with greater tonal range.

WOW! Not sure what a continuous tone negative is, doesn't sound too encouraging. Should this be a glass plate negative?

Cliff, film negatives were available when this photograph was originally taken.

Film used in cameras are continuous in tone. To me, what's being offered looks like a modern replication of an old photo. Using a camera to make a photographic duplicate. Loosing tonal quality along the way.
