Re: Strange gramophone on eBay
That's what's known by collectors and hobbyists as a "Crap-O-Phone," which is a total fake gramophone made probably in the 1980s or later. Ebay is full of them.

Do a Google search for "Crap-O-Phone" and you'll find numerous references.
This one is missing the horn's elbow, which is why the horn is pointed straight upward. They were assembled in wood-crafting shops in India and other places, using junked parts from old portables, as well as flimsy reproduction parts such as the sound box, and horn support. Many different case styles were produced.

Indeed! I am fairly new to the gramophone scene but I have done a lot of research previously. This one just looked like a quirky 'Crap-O-Phone' and not the typical brass horn / HMV ones! The HMV sticker made me smile the most!OrthoFan wrote: ↑Sat Feb 20, 2021 3:46 pm That's what's known by collectors and hobbyists as a "Crap-O-Phone," which is a total fake gramophone made probably in the 1980s or later. It kind of looks like foot stool converted into a phonograph...

Why buy an old, dirty one when you can buy a new, clean one?!

Re: Strange gramophone on eBay
The real question is why buy one at all? Every one is a blemish to our hobby.

Re: Strange gramophone on eBay
That is true - but sometimes there are some original, old, scarce, genuine parts used, like a tone arm, horn elbow, etc and I think people some-times buy them for these parts.
So, it seems, these crapophones are always worth a 'quick look'.
