Rare crocodile grey HMV 101 ?

Post by poodling around »

It is described as an HMV 102 in error.

However, is this the model described by Dave Cooper in his indispensable book 'The Perfect Portable Gramophone', page 28, (which I was fortunate enough to acquire for a trifling £ 5 or so some time ago) as a 'crocodile cloth' 'pale brown' and no-one recalls seeing a clearly identifiable grey ?

The listing is still live. Although I have no wish to buy it I have just tested it with a bid, and as expected was immediately outbid.
I hope someone here gets it. I am still looking for a Grey 102 to complete the set.

I had it on my Watch List out of interest, as the supplying dealer, Milliers of Weston-super-Mare, were local to me.

I never knew the grey model was desirable. I got mine a couple years ago for a lark because I was the only bidder. I didn't know it was a "grey" model from the listing, it was only when I received it and saw the horn interior was indeed grey. I'm not fond of the pale brown exterior, it always looks like its begging for a rejuvenating polish- but the crocodile texture makes up for that.
