This, unless HMV made the 97 portable in brown, which I don't think they did, is a 94 (export only) Identical to the 97, except that it has a double-spring motor, and has the letters H.M.V. under the trademark, which was not used in the UK. No winding handle, but an easy one to find, as it's the same as the 97 one.

Is the 94 shown in "HMG"? I don't recall seeing it in there. The 97 and 94 are not colonial models.

The Ebay example does not have "H.M.V." printed under the decal.

According to Dave Cooper's book on HMV portables, the 94 was a short lived export model using a 27040B motor and No.21 soundbox. It was supplied with a record tray.
It cost 100 Rupees in polished wood and 90 Rupees in brown leatherette. A canvas cover was an extra cost option.

So is the Ebay gramophone a 94? Do we know this only because it's in brown rexine? I'm not familiar with the 94 and 97 models to be able to spot any other obvious differences.

The answer probably lies beneath the turntable, where there should be an ID plaque.
If I was interested in bidding I would have asked the question, but I am not.
One wonders how the seller knows it to be in "Full working order" when he has no winding handle.

Presumably a 94 would just say "94" on it whereas the double spring variant would say "94B"?

B/4 also means 1940, I believe?

The 94 is not shown in "HMG", but on page 251, the second photo down shows the trade mark, and the text states quite clearly that this is from a 94, "a double-spring version of the 97".

Further reference to the 94 is in Dave Coopers book "The perfect portable gramophone". Page 100 states with reference to the 94 that is was an export only model.

Export, yes, colonial model, no. The so called "colonial models" were made in India for that market. I don't believe the 94 was of Indian manufacture. Thats not to say some Hayes assembled 94s didn't end up in India.
