Having never seen one before, there are now two suspiciously similar Kinephones on Ebay at the moment. Are these yet more Indian knock offs ? One certainly looks like a brand new box where someone has put water on the staples to rust them .....

There's an enormous business and market in oxidizing all sorts of things to make them look old! I've seen it in the flea market and in more serious businesses, for disgrace and shame!
Even they blow furniture with wood sticks that have protruding nails, to imitate old woodworm holes in newly made furniture. Then stain and wax do the final trick.. .

The second link actually specifies "This was manufactured in Secunderabad, Deccan, India". Is that where the original was made?Gramtastic wrote: ↑Fri Sep 24, 2021 4:13 am Having never seen one before, there are now two suspiciously similar Kinephones on Ebay at the moment. No they were made in the England c 1925 , the Secunderabad stamp is of a music salon in India , and would still appear to be in existence https://www.google.com/search?q=reid+mu ... CA0&uact=5 there is one being used here https://www.pinterest.com/pin/12736811426891812/ If they were modern reproductions one would expect dozens to be around not two ?

I agree, I saw one in an antique shop in Michigan several years ago that looked just like these marked as New Old Stock.

I agree that they look legit.. I have a new - old stock one that I bought 30 years ago that looks exactly the same, with the same patina on the cardboard box.

I think these kinephones together with Tango two toys were found by Jerry Madsen who bought a very large quantity of new old stock from India in the 1980s , I remember he had spare parts made for some of the Tango twos including the tinplate dance parts which were missing on some and some of the dancers skirts which had disintegrated, some of the boxes were pristine except most had rusty staples
