In Australia the alternative to eBay is Gumtree. It doesn't charge commissions on sales, but if you want to sell something there are lots of offers to pay for "upgrades", like ensuring top position in searches and your ad appearing on the homepage. I believe it was bought out by eBay so they can ensure that there is competition, therefore avoiding regulatory accusations of being a monopoly. It explains why Gumtree is nowhere as sophisticated as eBay - they don't want you using the cheaper alternative (eg. I find that after a few months my search alerts are automatically deleted). Bigger commercial sellers tend to eBay, and small business, students and mum's+dad's tend to use Gumtree.

Etsy is another alternate to eBay, but will probably charge similar premiums. More craft and other rubbish focus. And then there is facebook marketplace, I can't comment, as I refuse to be on that site.
