Gumtree is in the UK as an eBay alternate https://www.gumtree.com/.
It's not as flash as eBay, but worth a look.

It is quite popular in Australia for free listings. Not as comprehensive as eBay but some items of interest can come up.

Yes, Gumtree is owned by eBay. It's so they can claim there is an alternative online marketplace so they can claim that eBay is not a monopoly. It's also why the Gumtree site is not as sophisticated as eBay. However, Gumtree does allow free listings without commission (you do get lots of offers to pay for premium positioning and other marketing extras though). This attracts a different group of sellers/buyers in comparison to eBay.
I've found it OK in Australia, I don't know what it's like in the UK. However, you do need to be careful of scammers and low-ball-offers - I haven't had any problems but have heard some stories (as expected in today's economy).
