EMG XB - Auction

Post by poodling around »

The auction prices for EMG's have been low recently so who knows, this might sell for less than £1,000 ?

The soundbox looks different from the Expert: if such is the case, the prospective buyer should consider the price of replacing it for a genuine one. The curiosity is the piece of paper indicating the name of the owner, like a deed.

They say in the description it is 'fitted with an E.M.G. 2-spring nickel tri-spoke plated brass soundbox' ?

The soundbox seems having its front spring and the back spring support based on the side view photo of it. So obviously it has at least two springs, but I have never seen any EMG soundboxes which only have the front and the back springs. So it doesn't have any springs on two sides?

I've seen another EMG soundbox identical to this with just two springs. I figured the owner (or EMG) must have realised that the two side springs are really unnecessary as they do in effect reduce the compliance of the pivot which is not really a good thing. I find all EMG and Expert soundboxes work better with just two springs. The four spring soundboxes always sound a bit stifled to my ears, certainly with jazz and pop records.

I've found the 4 spring soundboxes have other strengths. For one at least, they can bring coherence and focus to dense orchestral soundscapes. I remember listening to a Beecham record of Delius with emgcr years ago and the difference was striking.

£6000 hammer price equating to £7940 all-up. A thundering bargain for a good Oversize.

I feel the auctioneers as so often were foolish not to have made more of the provenance - Francis Jackson, composer and one of our top organists (York Minster for decades) who died last year aged 104. This EMG of his was even mentioned in passing in this article https://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/105677 ... ife-music/ and in his autobiography there is a photo of him as a young man with an Oversize at Coll Earn House before WW2, possibly this very one which he may have later acquired.

Wow, if it is shipped to the US from UK, it has to be double priced at least like USD 20,000 to sell in the US.
